A Horse Owners Guide To Fly Care

Dare we say it, but it finally seems to be heating up across the country! With the increased heat brings another challenge for horse owners: flies!

Flies can be extremely bothersome for horses, causing physical discomfort, causing irritation and even transmitting diseases.

To help you this season, we’ve put together a helpful guide to fly care.

Repellents

Fly repellents such as sprays or gels help reduce the physical irritation caused by flies. By keeping flies at bay, horses experience less discomfort, leading to decreased stress and improved overall well-being.

Our best-selling fly repellents include Leovet Power Phaser and Carr Day and Martin Extra Strength Insect Repellent.

Fly Rugs

Fly rugs provide a physical barrier that prevents flies from landing on and biting the horse, significantly reducing irritation and discomfort. By keeping flies away, fly rugs help prevent skin conditions caused by fly bites, such as allergic reactions, hives, and dermatitis. This is especially important for horses with sensitive skin or allergies. Many fly rugs also offer UV protection, shielding horses with light or sensitive skin from harmful sun rays and preventing sunburn.

Our most popular fly rugs include the Horseware Mio Fly Rug which is an excellent value option and the LeMieux Kudos Shower Pro Waterproof Fly Rug.

Fly Masks

Fly masks provide a physical barrier that prevents flies from landing on and biting the horse's face, particularly around sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and muzzle. This helps reduce irritation and discomfort caused by fly bites. There are a wide range of options available depending on material and coverage. Our most popular fly masks are the Rambo Flymask Plus Non Treated and the LeMieux Armour Shield Fly Protector Half Mask.
